MOCĂNIŢA STEAM TRAIN

In the land of the deep forests and high mountains, on the bank of the Wasser river and just a few kilometers south of the Ukrainian border the last forestry narrow gauge steam railway in Europe operates. The Mocăniţa narrow gauge steam train is used all year long since 1932, each day the trains are going almost 60 km inside the forest, up in the Carpathians, for bringing down logs loaded wagons. This is not a museum line as timber is daily needed by sawmills and the wood industry in Vișeu de Sus village. In the last years, steam locomotives are less used for production trains, but they are more used for tourist trains. The tours run every day at 09:00 and 10:00 (basic fare 65 ROL / 7 hours / 21,6 km) when decades-old wagons are pulled by one of the historical steam locomotives. There is generous free parking space for campers with toilets and electricity at the station (gated from 22:00 till 07:00).
