BARINGO LAKE

After a long drive, we finally reached Lake Baringo, a stunning freshwater lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, known for its rich biodiversity, abundant birds (around 500 species), hippos, crocodiles, and unique islands. We parked on the banks of the lake at the famous Baby Bush Camp, where we booked our boat trip (5,000 KES / 3 hours) for the next day to see fish eagles catch fish and villages.

Lake Baringo’s geography is defined by its location in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, featuring a freshwater lake roughly 130 sq km in area with an average depth of around 5 meters, fed by rivers like the Molo, with no surface outlet, leading to water seeping into the underlying volcanic rock. The dramatic Tugen Hills surround it to the west and the Laikipia Escarpment to the east, creating a unique landscape with geothermal activity and significant biodiversity. However, it is currently facing challenges from rising water levels that are impacting local communities and ecosystems.
