Bongoyo Island is a small, uninhabited island located approximately 2.5 km north of Dar es Salaam, known for its pristine white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and diverse marine life, making it a popular spot for day trips for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxation. Geographically, it features two main beaches, a more developed one on the northwest side with tourist facilities (Safari beer – 0,5 l / 5000 TZS) and a longer, more secluded one on the northeast side. The island is largely covered in dense forest with two walking trails and some baobab trees. The island is part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System (🎟️47,500 TZS) and features habitats like coral reefs, seagrass beds, and a tidal lagoon with mangroves.
We arrived at Slipway Hotel, from where boats (🎟️30,000 TZS) depart every two hours from 9:30, the last departure is at 15:30 and on the way back at 17:30 from the island. The boat ride takes about 30 minutes.
