On our way to Aberdare NP, after a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Nairobi, we made a lunch stop at the Blue Post Hotel, just off the A2 near Thika. Hotel was built in 1908 by Captain Ward and originally served as a post office for farmers. It has a long colonial history, is famously mentioned in Elspeth Huxley’s book The Flame Trees of Thika. The grounds were pristine and quiet, the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink on the restaurant’s lawns overlooking the Chania Falls (gatekeeper 1,000 KES). The smaller but still impressive Thika Falls are on the other side of the grounds in a large field next to a craft centre and children’s play area. There is also a small animal park and museum on the grounds.
