DATOGA TRIBE

The Datoga, also known as Mang’ati in Swahili, are an agro-pastoral Nilotic-speaking tribe in Tanzania, primarily residing in the northern regions around Lake Eyasi and near Mount Hanang. They are known for their unique traditions, including blacksmithing, distinctive attire, and a pastoralist lifestyle centred around cattle herding.

Visiting the Datoga tribe gave us a glimpse into their pastoral lifestyle and blacksmithing skills. We visited traditional huts, observed metalworking, such as jewellery and arrowhead creation, and learned about their culture, social structure, and rituals.

We took a car for 100 USD from Karatu and paid the guide 130 USD to arrange the visit to the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. It was a full-day trip, and after that, we finally drove towards Arusha.
