DRIVE TO GONDAR

The security situation in Ethiopia’s Amhara region is highly volatile due to ongoing conflict between government forces and Amhara militia groups (Fano), leading to widespread violence, armed clashes, and civil unrest. This has resulted in disrupted services, potential for rapid deterioration, and a heightened risk for travel, with some authorities advising against all travel to the area. The conflict has also led to increased crime, displacement, and the collapse of some regional security and services.

That’s why we hired a small car with a local driver for 18,500 ETB. The road from Bahir Dar to Gondar is approximately 168 km, and it took us about 4 hours, following a scenic route through diverse landscapes. The journey included driving through rural areas and hills on a good tarmac with a few slightly damaged sections.
