Feeding wild hyenas in Harar is a unique cultural practice that has persisted for centuries. The practice is said to have started in the 19th century during a famine to stop hyenas from preying on livestock by providing an alternative food source. Today, it is a tourist attraction (🎟️500 ETB), where locals known as “hyena men” feed the hyenas raw meat on sticks, and visitors can also participate under guidance. The activity is considered safe when carried out under the guidance of experienced feeders, who handle wild animals using their knowledge of hyena behaviour. The hyenas are wild animals, not trained or caged, and are accustomed to human presence.
