NUNGWI

We spent a few days in Nungwi, a highly popular and well-regarded destination located on the northernmost tip of Zanzibar Island. It’s known for its stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a vibrant atmosphere that balances a traditional village feel with modern tourism. Historically, it was primarily known as a dhow boatyard and fishing village. Until the 1990s, the local population was opposed to tourism; however, in recent years, it has emerged as the most visited tourist destination in Zanzibar.

The most notable feature of Nungwi is its beautiful beaches with powdery white sand and calm, clear waters. Unlike some other areas of Zanzibar, Nungwi’s location at the northern tip means the tide changes are less dramatic. This allows for swimming at almost any time of day. The most scenic part is the western section of Nungwi Beach, offering excellent swimming conditions and some of the best restaurants and hotels in town. Facing west, this part of the beach offers spectacular sunset views over the Indian Ocean, making it a favourite spot for evening strolls and dhow cruises.

Nungwi boasts a quiet nightlife scene, with notable highlights including the Che Rock Bar and, on weekends, Coccobello Disco (🎟️20,000 TZS), featuring a vibrant atmosphere, as well as Kendwa Rocks, famous for its stunning full moon parties.
