Before we left Nanyuki early in the morning, we made a short stop at the Equator monument next to our parking spot. Then we drove for two hours to Thomson’s Falls, a 74-meter waterfall in Nyahururu, named after Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson. It is a popular tourist destination (🎟️1,000 KES) known for its spectacular viewpoints, nature walks, and a nearby hippo pool upstream. There is a trail down to the base, but some books warn that it’s not safe to visit due to recent robberies. There are quite a few hustlers and hawkers, as well as a group of so-called “local performers” who want to take a photo with tourists for a fee. It was very quiet during our visit, so, just for the effort of dressing like local Maasai and Agikuyu, we gave them 200 KES for the photo (4x 50 KES).
