VILLAGE HEALER

Our last interesting stop on the island of Ukerewe was at the house of a local shaman. Ukerewe Island is known for its traditional healing practices, with local shamans, or “waganga,” playing a significant role. These healers address a range of ailments, from physical illnesses to spiritual concerns, and even offer protection from curses and bad luck. Some healers also create amulets for hunting or calming storms.

Traditional healing is deeply embedded in the culture of Ukerewe, with practices passed down through generations. Unlike herbalists, these healers can address spiritual issues, like curses, by identifying the source and offering remedies. Shamans provide treatments for various conditions, including fever, skin infections, malaria, and even fertility issues.
