The evening before the visit, we did our research and spent two hours finding a reliable local tour operator in Nyeri. After some negotiation, we agreed on a safari van for 120 USD for a day in Aberdare National Park (🎟️70 USD). It is a diverse highland park in Kenya known for its dramatic, misty scenery, waterfalls, and rich wildlife, including the Big Five, endangered species such as the black rhino and bongo antelope, and a wide variety of birds. We can confirm that animals may be there, but as usual, they hide very well. So, this park is definitely worth a visit for the landscape, but not for the animals. It is much cooler than the savannahs due to its high altitude (2,000 meters to over 4,000 meters), and popular activities include wildlife viewing (especially from lodges like Treetops and The Ark), hiking, and birdwatching. The park is also historically significant as the site of the Mau Mau rebellion and the place where Queen Elizabeth II learned of her father’s death.
Our primary interest was to explore several impressive waterfalls, including the tallest in Kenya, Karuru Falls, which plunges 273 meters in three tiers. Other notable falls include the beautiful Gura Falls, the steep Chania Falls, and the captivating Magura Falls.
