IGELEKE ROCK ART

On our way to Dodoma, we made a short stop at Igeleke to see ancient rock paintings. We hired a tuk-tuk to get to the site (5,000 TZS) and picked up a man with keys (10,000 TZS) on our way there. The ochre drawings depict human figures, an elephant, a jumping eland, and a giraffe hiding in long grass. The art shares stylistic similarities with other rock art sites in Tanzania and southern Africa, depicting scenes of daily life, hunting, and rituals that offer a window into the beliefs of the early inhabitants of the region.
