MAHAVELONA & AROUND

Our original plan was to drive from Manambato to Mahambo to catch the next-morning boat to St Marie Island with El Condor, but unfortunately, the weather turned bad. We were informed that the first boats might go again after Easter. We got that bad news in the middle of nowhere, some kilometres behind Toamasina, so we decided to spend a night at a famous local beach resort, Mahavelona.

Nestled along the eastern coast of Madagascar, Mahavelonaโ€”often called Foulpointeโ€”is a charming beach destination known for its relaxed atmosphere and scenic shoreline. With calm, shallow waters protected by coral reefs, itโ€™s an ideal spot for swimming.

Beyond its coastal appeal, Mahavelona is also home to a fascinating historical landmark – Fort Manda (๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ 5,000 MGA). Built in the 19th century during the reign of King Radama I, the fort was constructed to defend against foreign invasions, particularly from European powers. Its unique coral-stone walls and strategic seaside location tell a story of resistance and ingenuity.
