We spent several days driving on the TanZam Highway, built between 1968 and 1973, with financing from a joint effort between Sweden, the World Bank, and the International Development Association (IDA) for sections in Tanzania, and loans from the United Kingdom and the World Bank for sections in Zambia.
The Tanzam Highway is a key 2,400 km international route linking the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam to landlocked Zambia and other countries, providing vital access to the sea for trade and transporting agricultural products. Designated Trunk Road T1 in Tanzania and the Great North Road in Zambia, it traverses diverse landscapes, including mountainous areas with hazardous sections, such as the Kitonga Gorge. The road has undergone significant rehabilitation efforts to improve safety and efficiency.
