For a more intimate and interactive wildlife encounter, the Vakona Forest Lodge Reserve offers a unique complement to the wilder parks of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Located near Analamazaotra Special Reserve, this private reserve is especially popular for its “lemur island” experience (๐๏ธ40,000 MGA). This fenced reserve features several species, including roughly 30 lemurs: Brown lemurs, Bamboo lemurs, Black-and-white ruffed lemurs, and Red ruffed lemurs.
Here, we stepped onto small forested islets where several habituated lemur species roam freely. Unlike in the dense rainforest, sightings are almost guaranteedโand incredibly close. Curious lemurs approached our guide for some banana treats, and that was always the right moment to take a shot. We didn’t expect too much, but in the end, it was a really fun 40-minute visit.
