Lake Eyasi is located near Karatu in northern Tanzania. It is a seasonal shallow endorheic salt lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau, just south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania.
It is known for its unique cultural landscape, including the Hadzabe (Bushmen) and Datoga tribes. While the Hadzabe are primarily hunter-gatherers, the Datoga are pastoralists and blacksmiths. Fishermen also inhabit the area, particularly during the wet season when the lake is fuller, and they fish for tilapia and other species. Fishing opportunities are primarily in the streams and springs that feed the lake rather than the lake itself.
