SOUTH COAST

We hired a car for 150,000 TZS for the whole day and drove from Pongwe towards the Makunduchi Lighthouse. It’s a red-and-white concrete tower on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, a 27-meter-tall historical landmark built by the British colonial office in 1919, offering views of the Indian Ocean. The south coast region, including Makunduchi, features pristine beaches, vibrant local life, and traditional houses alongside growing tourism facilities, providing an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience perfect for cultural immersion and stunning sunsets. While the lighthouse itself is currently closed for interior tours, its exterior and the surrounding scenery are a popular spot for photography, relaxation, and exploring the local fishing villages.
