ROAD TO CHIRO

We started early morning in Addis Ababa, took a highway (70 ETB), and continued on a pretty good tarmac road up to Awash National Park, where we made a half-day excursion with a local ranger (600 ETB), then continued through mountainous scenery to Chiro. It is a town and former administrative centre in the West Hararghe Zone of Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, located about 232 km from the capital city, Addis Ababa. It is situated in the Ahmar Mountains, at an altitude of 1,826 meters. The town’s population was 33,670 in the 2007 census, with the majority of Muslims, followed by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and Protestants.
