AMBOHIMANGA

Just a short distance from Antananarivo, Ambohimanga, the “Blue Hill” and the most sacred site of the Merina Kingdom in Madagascar, offers a unique glimpse into Madagascar’s royal and spiritual past. Once a stronghold of the Merina people and the base of King Andrianampoinimerina in the 18th century, it played a key role in unifying the kingdom. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains both a well-preserved royal complex and a sacred place where Malagasy people continue to honour their ancestors, making it not just a historical landmark but a living symbol of national identity and tradition.

The city is surrounded by a wall and accessed through historically significant gates designed to be blocked by massive, rolling stones. The complex (๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ15,000 MGA, ๐Ÿ“ท2,000 MGA) blends traditional wood construction with later European additions, showing the evolution of the palace structures. It features traditional royal structures, including the original simple wooden home of King Andrianampoinimerina and the later, larger summer palace. The site includes sacred fountains, royal tombs, sacrificial stones, and a royal forest, all of which hold deep spiritual significance.
