Stretching for more than 450km along Madagascar’s southwest coast, the Great Reef is the fifth-largest coral reef system in the world and one of the country’s premier destinations for snorkelling, diving and whale watching. Its turquoise lagoons, vibrant coral gardens and rich marine life attract travellers seeking both adventure and remote tropical beauty. The lively coastal city of Toliara — still often referred to by its former French name, Tuléar — serves as the main gateway to the reef and the surrounding beaches. At the southern end of the RN7, the city buzzes with colourful markets, seaside cafés and an endless flow of bicycle rickshaws weaving through sun-drenched streets.
Often called the “City of the Sun” for its hot, dry climate and year-round sunshine, Toliara has a fascinating, layered history. Originally a Vezo fishing settlement and trading outpost, it became strategically important during the colonial era when the French established it as a port city in 1895. Long before that, nearby Saint-Augustin Bay was frequented by pirates and buccaneers navigating the Mozambique Channel during the 17th century. Today, traces of the colonial period remain visible in the city’s orderly grid-plan layout and faded French architecture, giving Toliara a distinctive atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Madagascar.
The region surrounding Toliara is rich in natural attractions. The Arboretum d’Antsokay showcases the extraordinary biodiversity of Madagascar’s arid southwest, including rare spiny forest plants found nowhere else on Earth. Nearby, Reniala Reserve is famous for its towering baobabs and unique wildlife, while the Honko Mangrove Reserve offers canoe excursions through protected mangrove ecosystems teeming with birds and marine life. Offshore, the laid-back beach villages of Ifaty and Anakao are ideal bases for diving, kitesurfing and boat trips to untouched islands and coral reefs.
Humpback whales migrate through the region from July to September, making this one of Madagascar’s most rewarding coastal escapes for nature lovers.
