After the punishing drive from Gorongosa National Park to Gorongosa town—just 65 kilometres in four hours—we thought the worst was behind us. We were wrong. What followed was another level of hell. The official Estradas de Moçambique road conditions app, which provides updates on the country’s highways, proved to be completely misleading. It rated the route from Gorongosa to Caia as being in good to fair condition, with an estimated driving time of just 3.5 hours. The reality was dramatically different. We covered the 227-kilometre journey in a gruelling 12.5 hours of almost non-stop driving, averaging a miserable 18 km/h.
The EN1 highway is one of the roughest and most demanding roads we have driven in Africa. Expect extensive, permanent pavement failure, with long stretches of broken tarmac riddled with enormous potholes that force vehicles to crawl at walking pace. Even the sections that still appear paved are heavily eroded, making normal distance-to-time estimates completely unrealistic.
Large commercial freight trucks share this narrow highway, making the journey even more hazardous as everyone weaves around the damaged sections of road. A high-clearance vehicle—or, ideally, a robust 4×4—is strongly recommended. Some potholes are more than 50 cm deep, with sharp edges and unpredictable shapes, making them capable of seriously damaging any ordinary passenger car. In fact, during the entire drive we hardly saw any private cars at all.
Driving after dark is strongly discouraged. The recommended travel window is between approximately 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., when the road hazards are at least visible. Unfortunately, completing this route in a single day is virtually impossible, yet there are no suitable or secure places to stop for the night along the way.
The route is not only exhausting; it also feels insecure. Many freight trucks carry lookouts sitting on top of the trailers, and others drag thorny branches behind them as a deterrent against theft or people attempting to climb onto the vehicle from behind. These improvised security measures are a stark reminder that drivers on this road take the risk seriously. To make matters worse, there are virtually no fuel stations, tyre repair shops, or mechanical services anywhere along the route, so a puncture or breakdown can quickly become a major problem.
