Driving from Beira to Vilankulo via the Inchope interchange was another 16-hour challenge, covering 527 kilometres. From Beira, the route heads west along the N6 to the vital Inchope interchange, where we turned south onto the N1.
The N6 was in good condition, making the first part of the journey relatively smooth. Unfortunately, everything changed once we joined the N1 again. The road south was in really bad shape — slightly better than the nightmare around Gorongosa, but still heavily damaged, with massive potholes and plenty of heavy truck traffic making the journey even more exhausting.
Thankfully, after turning off the N1 towards Vilankulo, the road surface improved dramatically and the final stretch into town was once again on good tarmac.
And then came a pleasant surprise: every petrol station we checked in Vilankulo had diesel available. After travelling through northern Mozambique, where finding fuel was sometimes a serious challenge, this felt almost like a luxury. Definitely something we could not say about all the places we had passed through further north.
