We can confirm that Vilankulo is one of Mozambique’s premier coastal towns, famous for its powder-white beaches, warm turquoise waters and vibrant local culture. Located in Inhambane Province, this laid-back coastal town is the main gateway to the breathtaking Bazaruto Archipelago.
Originally a small settlement inhabited by local communities, the area was reportedly an important stop for traders as early as the 14th century. The town takes its name from a highly respected local chief, Gamela Vilankulo Mukoke. During the Portuguese colonial period, the name was adapted to “Vilanculos”, but after Mozambique gained independence, the spelling officially reverted to “Vilankulo”, reflecting its indigenous roots. What was once a modest fishing village has since developed into a thriving tourist destination, attracting significant international investment in hotels, resorts and other tourism infrastructure.
Vilankulo is often described as the water-sports capital of Mozambique, largely thanks to its proximity to the pristine Bazaruto Archipelago National Marine Park. The area offers world-class scuba diving and snorkelling, spectacular beaches and a wide range of activities. Traditional wooden dhows sail daily from Vilankulo towards the islands, offering opportunities to spot whale sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and, with some luck, the rare dugong. Consistent winds and sheltered, crystal-clear bays also make the area ideal for kitesurfing and paddleboarding, while deep-sea fishing is another popular activity. You can also go horse riding along the beach or simply explore the relaxed little town.
We cannot recommend the food at Baobab Beach, where we parked our truck, but fortunately, Vilankulo itself has some excellent options. Kilimanjaro Café served what is, so far, the best food we have had anywhere in Mozambique. For drinks or a late-night bite, we recommend Nyelete Bar, which gets particularly lively on weekends.
