Pretty good tarmac by Mozambican standards brought us to the laid-back coastal paradise of Barra Beach. We covered the 308 kilometres in around six hours, which felt almost like a luxury after the roads we had experienced further north.
Located in Inhambane Province, Barra is a beautiful coastal destination known for its endless white sands, warm Indian Ocean waters and relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere. The area is famous for its natural tidal pools, ocean safaris and excellent diving, with opportunities to spot whale sharks, manta rays and sea turtles.
The peninsula is also home to a historic lighthouse offering panoramic views over the coastline, as well as the grounded wreck of the SS Inharrime, adding a little maritime history to this otherwise idyllic stretch of beach.
Recent cyclones heavily damaged the coast, but we still found a good parking spot and had an excellent food and chat with the owner at The Captain’s Table.
