We’ve been incredibly lucky with the weather so far, but as you can see in the photos from Inhambane, the rainy week arrived unexpectedly, and the next few days felt more like the middle of the wet season.
Our first overnight stop on the way to Maputo was at the famous Quinta St. Antonio in Lindela, where we tried their legendary large homemade vetkoek, filled with curried mince and mayo and served with their signature homemade chilli sauce. The next morning, we covered 321 kilometres to Bilene in a pleasant six hours, cruising along good tarmac despite a heavy storm.
Praia do Bilene is a popular resort town in southern Mozambique, located about 180 kilometres north of Maputo and famous for the enormous, crystal-clear Uembje Lagoon. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to enjoy Bilene as much as we had hoped because of the miserable weather. The lagoon itself is roughly 8 kilometres wide and 27 kilometres long, with warm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimming, kayaking and kitesurfing.
Separated from the open Indian Ocean by a massive belt of sand dunes, the lagoon can be crossed by boat or 4×4 to reach the crashing waves and endless beaches of the ocean side. Under blue skies, Bilene must be a fantastic place to spend a few lazy days โ but we arrived just in time for the rain.
