The Cradle of Humankind is a world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, located about 50 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg. It is famous for its remarkable collection of ancient hominid fossils, offering an extraordinary glimpse into our human origins.
We made a short stop at the main visitor centre (🎟️150 ZAR) to explore the museum before visiting other important sites in the area over the next few days.
The region is home to an extensive network of limestone caves that have yielded around 40% of the world’s known human-ancestor fossils. Among the most significant discoveries are “Mrs Ples,” a roughly 2-million-year-old skull, the remarkably complete “Little Foot” skeleton, and Homo naledi.
The Cradle encompasses several major archaeological and palaeoanthropological sites, including the Sterkfontein Caves, Swartkrans, and Kromdraai—making it one of the most fascinating places in the world to explore the story of human evolution.
