GIN DISTILLERY

We stopped for a tasting of the famous “Four Some Gin” (195 ZAR) at Safari Distilling House, formerly known as Gin & Co, a prominent South African boutique craft distillery. The distillery is known for capturing the character of the African wilderness through artisanal, small-batch spirit production.

The distillery took root in South Africa’s Lowveld, building its reputation at the Casterbridge Centre in White River, Mpumalanga. It grew alongside the country’s booming craft-spirit movement, focusing on transforming local biodiversity and regional ingredients into premium spirits. Over time, Safari Distilling House expanded beyond its original production base, becoming a destination for visitors and spirit enthusiasts.

Production remains focused on handcrafted, small-batch spirits made using traditional distillation techniques and locally sourced ingredients. Its flagship gins are created with a carefully selected combination of around 12 botanicals, including distinctive African ingredients such as African Potato Bush, spekboom, marula, wild ginger and fresh citrus peel.

The range includes several signature gins, most notably the award-winning Safari African Gin and the Dollie Gin range, as well as a macadamia nut liqueur and orange liqueur.

Safari African Gin has a bright and lively citrus character with clean juniper on the nose, developing into a smooth, herbaceous mid-palate before finishing with earthy spice and the distinctive warmth of wild ginger.
