The Cirque Rouge (Red Circus) near Mahajanga is a stunning, protected natural amphitheatre featuring eroded cliffs in vibrant shades of red, pink, ochre, and white. These unique geological formations were caused by intense erosion of sedimentary rocks. Located about 12 km from the city centre, near the Grand Pavois beach, it offers a dramatic, “lunar-like” landscape, often best experienced at sunset (๐๏ธ 5,000 MGA, guide 40,000 MGA). Still, we would recommend coming at the latest by 3 pm, not like us at 4 pm, when the sun was already too low. The little hike around the canyon took us around 40 minutes.
