DOUIRET (دويرات)

Our last stop in a rugged mountainous region was Douiret. This little ruined Berber village was a fortified granary located on a hilltop. It’s smaller and quieter than the Chenini. Village ruins are surrounded by citadel overlooking troglodyte houses dug in the mountain. The ancestry of Douiret is believed to be traced back to the 14th century. In 1850, the Douiret population was around 3500 inhabitants. It has been an important caravan stop between Gabès to the north and the Libyan city of Ghdamès to the south.
