The Macuti Lighthouse and the shipwreck lying directly in front of it form one of Beiraโs most iconic and atmospheric landmarks on Macuti Beach. The 28-metre-high lighthouse was built in 1904 and was originally painted with black-and-white horizontal bands; today, it is painted red and white. Although it remains an important navigational aid, the lighthouse itself has reportedly been abandoned for around 20 years.
Lying on the sand directly in front of the lighthouse is the wreck of the Macuti, a Dutch seagoing tug that was intentionally run aground in 1985 to serve as a breakwater. Before meeting its final fate here, the vessel even appeared on a Mozambican postage stamp.
At high tide, only the rusted remains of the wreck rise above the water, but at low tide, the entire skeleton of the vessel is exposed, allowing you to walk around โ and even through โ its weathered remains. With the lighthouse towering behind it and the Indian Ocean stretching endlessly ahead, it makes for one of the most atmospheric spots in Beira.
