We spent two nights in Mahajanga (Majunga), known as the “City of Flowers.” It is a vibrant, hot, and cosmopolitan port city on Madagascar’s northwest coast. Founded by Arab traders around 1700, it is a key historical trade hub featuring a mix of Comorian, Arab, Indian, and Malagasy cultures. In the 18th century, it was a prominent seat of the Sakalava Kingdom of Boina.
Key attractions include the massive 700-year-old baobab tree with a 21-meter circumference, the scenic “Corniche” (beachfront promenade), colonial-era buildings, and diverse religious sites, including mosques and churches.
After a full day of sightseeing, we had a nice dinner by the pool at Restaurant Gourmand Coco Lodge, and then walked to the opposite bar, Zanzibar. There are also other popular nightlife spots like Cotton Club, Le Lounge Vibes, Club 73 and Bois de Rose.
