MAHDIA (المهدية)

Mahdia is occupying a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea, it is blessed with a truly spectacular setting. We have explored relaxed cobblestone medina with whitewashed houses, which spreads through the length of the narrow peninsula to Cap d’Afrique. There are many shops and cozy cafes shaded by trees (fresh orange juice with cookie 5 TND). Then we went to the picturesque clifftop cemetery and the 16th-century El Kebir fortress. Mahdia’s fortress stands on the highest point of the peninsula, rising above medina. It was built on the ruins of an earlier Fatimid structure from 921.
