Monkey Bay is a lively port town situated on the Nankumba Peninsula along the southern shores of Lake Malawi. Named after the large population of monkeys that once inhabited the surrounding area, it has long played an important role in the region’s transport and maritime history. Today, it serves as the principal gateway for travellers exploring the lake and its many attractions.
Originally a small fishing village, the community relied heavily on the rich waters of Lake Malawi, with local fishermen navigating the shoreline in traditional dugout canoes. During the colonial era and the decades following independence, Monkey Bay evolved into a key centre for the construction, maintenance, and repair of vessels operating on the lake, cementing its status as a strategic transport hub.
The town remains closely linked to Malawi’s maritime heritage. It is the main harbour for the historic MV Ilala, the iconic passenger and cargo ferry that has connected lakeside communities for generations and continues to serve as a vital lifeline along Lake Malawi. Monkey Bay is also home to a naval base operated by the Malawi Defence Force, further underscoring its enduring importance as one of the country’s foremost lakeside ports.
