Antsirabe is one of the best places in Madagascar to discover traditional handicrafts, known for its intricate embroidery and inventive workshops that transform recycled materials into art. We visited a well-known atelier where artisans create remarkably detailed miniature rickshaws (pousse-pousse), bicycles, and cars using salvaged materials such as brake cables, electrical wire, aerosol cans, and even old medical equipment.
Our next stop focused on textiles, where skilled makers produce high-quality, hand-stitched pieces from Malagasy cotton. Their work often features delicate embroidery, with tablecloths, garments, and bags showcasing both precision and tradition.
Finally, we visited Maminirina Corne, where a craftsman demonstrated how zebu horns are carefully shaped and polished into elegant items such as jewellery, cutlery, and decorative boxes.
