We finally received approval to visit Sandstone Estates, a working commercial farm in South Africa’s Eastern Free State and home to one of the world’s largest private collections of vintage agricultural machinery, railways, military vehicles, and transport history.
Upon our arrival, we met Mariette Palmer, who spent several hours taking us through the impressive collections and sharing the stories behind many of the preserved machines.
The estate itself remains a fully operational commercial farm, growing crops such as wheat, maize, and sunflowers alongside livestock. What makes Sandstone particularly special is its approach to preservation: the machinery is not simply displayed as static museum pieces but is kept in working condition. Some of the historic tractors and steam engines are still used during agricultural operations and special events.
A highlight is the narrow-gauge railway collection, with more than 30 operational 2-foot-gauge steam locomotives, including powerful Garratt locomotives rescued from mines and sugar plantations in the region. More than 20 kilometres of track run across the estate, allowing these historic locomotives to continue operating in the landscape for which they were preserved.
The agricultural machinery collection is equally impressive, featuring numerous vintage tractors, including Field Marshalls, steam traction engines, stationary engines, and other historic farming equipment. The transport collection also includes classic cars, vintage buses, heavy trucks, and restored military vehicles, including a Sherman tank, with some restoration work carried out in cooperation with the South African Armour Museum.
Another unique part of the collection is the traditional ox-wagon heritage. Sandstone maintains working ox wagons, including a fully operational span of 32 Afrikaner oxen, keeping an important part of South Africa’s agricultural transport history alive.
The estate is also known for its major public events. Around Easter, the annual Cosmos Festival brings the machinery to life with operating steam engines, vintage tractors, train rides, and spectacular countryside scenery. Later in the year, visitors can experience the Cherry Express, which operates during the annual Ficksburg Cherry Festival in November.
For anyone fascinated by engineering, railways, agriculture, or transport history, Sandstone Estates is a remarkable place where history isn’t simply preserved—it still moves, works, and makes noise.
