SAVIKA BULLFIGHTING

We also had the chance to experience one of the most remarkable traditions of Betsileo heritage: Savika, the region’s traditional bullfighting ritual. The event took place in a remote area several kilometres outside Ambositra, deep in the countryside. Reaching it by car was impossible, so we had to embark on an unexpected and challenging hike across enormous rocks, through a deep river, and over steep hills.

Unable to find the location ourselves, we paid 5,000 MGA to a local farmer and her two children to guide us there. Once we arrived, we also covered their entrance fees so they could enjoy the event with us (🎟️ 1,500 MGA per person).

Savika is a traditional bare-handed bullfighting sport that holds deep cultural significance within Betsileo society. In this ritual, young men confront powerful zebu cattle to demonstrate their bravery, strength, and readiness for manhood. More than just a sport, Savika is considered an important rite of passage, symbolising a young man’s acceptance as a responsible member of the community. Today, it remains a vibrant and celebrated tradition, especially during Easter and Pentecost festivities.

Often described as a rare window into a living cultural heritage, attending a Savika match was an extraordinary experience. We were fortunate to be there on a Sunday, witnessing this energetic, daring, and deeply rooted Malagasy tradition firsthand.
