Because water is life, the Czech Republic is helping ensure that no child or family in rural Malawi has to walk miles each day in search of safe drinking water. Through its Small-Scale Local Projects programme, it has funded the construction of community water wells in some of the countryโs most underserved areas. During our stay near Nkhotakota, we were delighted to accept an invitation from Mr Hussein Chipala to visit two of these project sites and see their impact firsthand.
In rural Malawi, boreholes are far more than simple infrastructureโthey are lifelines. Reliable access to clean water dramatically reduces the spread of waterborne diseases, improves public health, and allows families to spend less time collecting water and more time on education, farming, and other productive activities. Safe water helps children stay in school, supports healthier households, and creates opportunities for entire communities to build a better future.
The project we visited was funded by the Czech Republic through a 500,000 CZK grant and was implemented in 2024. Eight boreholes were drilled to serve communities in the Bua area, benefiting villages such as Mvula, Chizuma, Kwacha, Madula, Chimwala, and several neighbouring settlements under local traditional authorities.
The initiative is expected to improve the lives of approximately 12,000 people, many of whom previously faced serious challenges related to unsafe water and recurring waterborne diseases. Access to clean and reliable water has already contributed to better health outcomes across the community. Local residents reported that families can now use safe water for drinking, cooking, and household needs, significantly reducing the risk of illness.
The benefits extend beyond health. Improved access to clean water has also had a positive effect on education, as schoolchildren no longer need to spend long hours fetching water before or after classes. With clean water available closer to home, children can focus more on their studies, improving school attendance and academic performance throughout the community.
