NORATUS (Նորատուս)

Our last stop and place for an overnight was Noratus village, with its breathtaking cemetery on the western edge of Lake Sevan. There are approximately 900 khachkars (headstones) dating from as far back as the 10th century. Legend has it that an invading army was forced to take cover as their commander mistook the field of khachkars for a battalion of enemy soldiers. There is no restaurant in the village, but a friendly local “babushka” invited us to visit her house and cooked us a delicious dinner from her local home products. And her husband Sergey, of course, served home-distilled vodka the whole evening.
