We made it to the world’s saltiest lake, Lake Asale, also known as Lake Karum. It is a hypersaline lake in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, located about 120 meters below sea level, making it one of the lowest points on Earth. Lake Asale was formed over centuries through a geological process where it was flooded by the Red Sea, causing mineral-rich deposits to settle and form a thick salt crust. It has an extreme salinity of 43% primarily due to high evaporation and a lack of outflow. It is also known for its vast salt flats, which are still mined by the Afar people using traditional hand-cutting methods and transported by camel caravan.
