OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY

Today, it was again a bit difficult to find a safari car, but we made a deal with a local guide for 150 USD, including a very high car entrance fee (5,000 KES) for a full-day trip to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (🎟️110 USD). It is supposed to be a 90,000-acre non-profit wildlife conservancy, known for its significant conservation efforts, especially for rhinos. But with such an entrance fee and a massive volume of foreign visitors, it must be a pretty profitable business. It is home to the last two northern white rhinos in the world, the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa, and the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, which looks like a weird zoo.

The northern white rhinos from the Czech Republic (🎟️70 USD), including the last two living females, Najin and Fatu, were relocated as a last-ditch effort to save the subspecies from extinction. These rhinos were moved from the Dvur Králové Zoo to help them breed in a more natural habitat after efforts in captivity failed to produce offspring. While the two females remain, the subspecies is functionally extinct in the wild due to a history of poaching and civil unrest in their natural range.
