MALETSUNYANE FALLS

Maletsunyane Falls is a spectacular 192-metre single-drop waterfall plunging dramatically into a deep gorge near Semonkong. It is one of Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls (🎟️160 LSL). The enormous curtain of falling water creates a permanent cloud of mist around the gorge, which is believed to have inspired the name Semonkong, meaning “Place of Smoke”.

For our visit, we booked horses through Bonnini Homestay at 600 LSL per horse and set off on a roughly 20-kilometre, five-hour horseback ride to the falls. We rode hardy and sure-footed Basotho ponies, perfectly suited to the rugged mountain terrain.

The ride itself was as much an experience as the waterfall. Our route followed high-altitude rural paths through rolling valleys and across local streams, with spectacular mountain scenery all around us. Along the way, we passed local shepherds and villagers going about their daily lives.

It was a fantastic, authentic way to experience the remote landscapes around Semonkong—slowly, on horseback, and right in the middle of everyday Basotho life.
