DRIVE TO SOUTH

The drive from Lusaka to the Lower Zambezi covered 133 km and took around three hours. Although the route is relatively short, Lusaka’s traffic slowed our journey, and there were several enormous potholes along the T4. We followed the tarred Great East Road (T4) towards Chirundu before turning onto a rough, unpaved road for the final stretch into the Lower Zambezi National Park. Chirundu is a great stop to restock at Shoprite or take a bite at Hungry Lion or Debonairs Pizza.

Our journey to Livingstone was a much longer two-day transit, covering approximately 502 km via the T1. The highway was generally in excellent condition, with smooth, well-paved surfaces for most of the route, although a few degraded sections were noticeable around Mazabuka. We broke the journey with an overnight stop in Choma, where we refuelled and enjoyed dinner at Hungry Lion before continuing the next day.

One thing to keep in mind is the number of police checkpoints along this route. Be sure to observe all posted speed limits, as they are strictly enforced. Also, we paid the scam price of 200 ZMW at some toll gates (all 4 from Chipata to Lower Zambezi), but at the last two from Chirundu to Livingstone, it was just the regular and correct 20 ZMW.
