MORONDAVA

Morondava, a coastal city in western Madagascar, served as our base for three days as we explored the Kivalo mangroves, Kirindy Forest, Belo sur Tsiribihina, and the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs. Historically known as Nosy Miandroka until the 19th century, Morondava was once an important trading post linking Madagascar’s interior with the Mozambique Channel. The city was also at the heart of the powerful Sakalava Kingdom, renowned for its deep reverence for ancestors and its elaborate funerary art traditions.

We always ate our dinners at the Nosy Kely beachfront. Our favourite spots for good food were L’Etoile, Bleu Soleil, and Le Corail. Nightlife in Morondava is defined by a relaxed, beachside, and intimate atmosphere rather than bustling nightclubs. The famous spot is L’Oasis chez Jean-le-Rasta, famous for its baobab shots and signature cocktails. There are also some raw local venues, such as Cobra and Riotsy.
