Just before crossing into Zimbabwe, we enjoyed one final game drive in the 66-square-kilometre Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (package trip 65 USD), an iconic conservation area best known for protecting the Zambian side of the legendary Victoria Falls, its predator-free wildlife sanctuary, and Zambia’s only population of white rhinoceroses.
Officially established as a national park in 1972, Mosi-oa-Tunya lies on the southwestern edge of Livingstone and stretches for approximately 20 kilometres along the Zambezi River. The park encompasses the lush, rainforest-like ecosystem surrounding the falls as well as a fenced, predator-free section where wildlife can be viewed up close.
Mosi-oa-Tunya is the only national park in Zambia where visitors can see the majestic white rhinoceros. After Zambia’s rhino population was wiped out by poaching in the early 1990s, an ambitious reintroduction and conservation program brought the species back. Today, the park is home to a small but growing population of just nine white rhinos, which are protected around the clock by armed rangers, making every sighting a truly special experience.
