Nosy Be is Madagascarโs premier island destination, renowned for its white-sand beaches, fragrant ylang-ylang plantations, and vibrant marine life. Highlights include snorkelling in the Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve, hiking up Mont Passot for breathtaking 360-degree sunset views, exploring Lokobe National Park in search of lemurs, and taking boat trips to the idyllic island of Nosy Iranja.
Meaning โBig Islandโ in Malagasy, Nosy Be has a rich and layered history as a strategic trading hub. Around 900 AD, Arab traders established a settlement known as Mahilaka. After its decline, Indian settlers and the Antalaotra people founded the town of Marodoka, which became an important commercial centre. Later, Queen Tsiomeko and the Sakalava people sought refuge on the islandโthen called Nosy Manitra (โFragrant Islandโ)โto escape the expansion of the Merina Kingdom. In 1841, French Marine Infantry Captain Pierre Passot, under the commission of Admiral de Hell, formally claimed the island for France, renaming it Hell-Ville. During the colonial period, large-scale ylang-ylang cultivation was introduced, establishing Nosy Be as a major global source of essential oils. The island also played a role in global events: the Russian Second Pacific Squadron used its bay for refuelling before the Battle of Tsushima (1904โ1905), and in 1942, British forces landed to prevent Japanese occupation.
For beachgoers, Andilana Beach is widely considered the best spot for swimming, thanks to its calm, clear waters. Madirokely and Ambatoloaka are also popular, known for their lively atmosphere, water sports, and accessibility. During the day, consider relaxing at Beach Klub 22 or nearby Manga Beach Bar, both offering a laid-back seaside experience.
As night falls, Ambatoloaka and Madirokely come alive with a vibrant nightlife scene centred on beachside bars, energetic clubs, and dancing that continues until dawn. Widely regarded as the islandโs party hub, the area blends local Malagasy rhythms with international DJ sets. Popular venues such as Taxi Be, Bar Afro, and La Sirรจne draw lively crowds each evening. Start with sunset cocktails by the beach, then dance the night away while enjoying local favourites like THB (Three Horses Beer).
