Bosnia and Herzegovina

Craggily beautiful Bosnia and Hercegovina is most intriguing for its East-meets-West atmosphere born of blended Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian histories filtered through a Southern Slavic lens. Many still associate the country with the heartbreaking civil war of the 1990s, and the scars from that time are all too visible. But today’s visitors are likely to remember the country for its deep, unassuming human warmth, its beautiful mountains, numerous medieval castle ruins, raftable rivers, impressive waterfalls and bargain-value skiing.

SARAJEVO

Two days of sightseeing and tasting of local specialities in the mystical city. Ringed by mountains, Sarajevo is a singular city with a enticing East-meets-West vibe all of its own. It was once renowned as a religious melting pot, earning it the epithet ‘the Jerusalem of...

TAJAN NATIONAL PARK

We enjoyed few stops with lovely landscape on the way to Tajan National Park, but heavy storm and bad weather damaged our hiking plans in the area. So we just made overnight here and moved on. The mountains in this area aren’t like the towering peaks of the central Dinaric Alps...

PLIVA LAKES

JAJCE

Our first half-day stop in Bosnia and Herzegovina was fortified old town with an impressive waterfall. Throughout Bosnia’s long history, Jajce has been the home of medieval kings, Ottoman governors, and a range of different ethnic groups, as well as being one of President Tito’s earliest...

BANJA LUKA

We tasted local Nektar beer in Banja Luka during our first overnight at Bosnia and Herzegovina. This beautiful town is surrounded by rolling green hills. It is split in two by the Vrbas, a very rough river that, just a short distance from Banja Luka, suddenly loses its waterfalls and...
