MATKA CANYON

We took a diesel (104,50 MKD / l) on the way to the famous Matka Canyon – one of the most visited places in North Macedonia. This beautiful canyon is located only a short ride away from the capital of Skopje. We had rainy weather, but still, the high mountains rolling steeply to the deep gorge filled with green water look simply stunning. The Matka Lake covering roughly 5000 hectares within the Matka Canyon is the oldest artificial lake in the country. It is home to several medieval monasteries, ten caves, and the most venomous snake in south Europe, the horned viper. It’s better to hike through the canyon than to take a boat ride (25 min / 200 MKD / 3 km up and 3 km down the canyon). Food options are limited in the evening, most of the restaurants close around 7 PM and meal quality and prices are really “touristic”.
