During our visit to Mchinji District in central Malawi, we learned about an inspiring project that is transforming healthcare for women and children in one of the country’s rural communities. The Czech project, presented to us by Aaron Maluwa, president of the NGO organisation International Humanity, brings hope to mothers and newborns in rural Malawi.
A strong partnership between the Czech Republic, the Czech Embassy in Lusaka, International Humanity Czech Republic, and International Humanity Malawi is helping to build a new maternity wing at Fanuel Hospital in Fanuel Village. This important project aims to improve maternal and child healthcare for some of the most vulnerable women and families in the region.
For many women living in rural Malawi, access to safe and reliable healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth remains a major challenge. Long distances to medical facilities and limited resources can place both mothers and newborn babies at risk. The new maternity wing will help address these challenges by providing a safer and more supportive environment for women before, during, and after childbirth.
The new facility will include a delivery room, prenatal and neonatal care units, and educational spaces where families can learn about maternal health, nutrition, vaccination, and family planning. The project is designed not only to improve medical services but also to empower local communities through education and awareness.
Construction of the maternity wing is a community effort. Local residents are helping to prepare the building site and produce bricks, demonstrating a strong sense of ownership and commitment to improving healthcare in their village. The hospital will also be equipped with essential medical infrastructure and supplies needed to provide quality prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.
An important part of the project involves launching mobile outreach health services. These services will enable medical teams to travel to remote villages and provide essential healthcare to women who may otherwise struggle to access medical support. Training programmes will also be offered to local healthcare workers, focusing on safe motherhood, family planning, nutrition, and vaccination.
The long-term impact of this project could be life-changing for thousands of women and children across Mchinji District. By improving access to healthcare, the project aims to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths while promoting safer pregnancies and healthier families. Through education and community outreach, families will gain valuable knowledge to improve their overall well-being.
The project is also built on a sustainable partnership model. Local authorities will provide qualified medical staff, while International Humanity Malawi will help manage operational support. Experts from Ostrava University in the Czech Republic will contribute professional expertise and training to strengthen local healthcare capacity. Community participation throughout the project will help ensure its long-term success.
In addition to the maternity wing, there is an urgent need to build accommodation for three medical professionals who are expected to arrive from Mchinji District Hospital. Without suitable housing, it will be difficult to retain these essential healthcare workers in the community. Plans are therefore underway to construct three staff houses, allowing these professionals to live and work at Fanuel Hospital.
This project represents far more than the construction of a building. It is an investment in the future of rural Malawi and a powerful example of international cooperation making a real difference in people’s lives. The maternity wing at Fanuel Hospital will stand as a lasting symbol of partnership, compassion, and hope for generations to come.
As visitors, readers, and global citizens, we are reminded that even small acts of support can have a profound impact. Together, we can help create safer births, healthier families, and stronger communities for the people of Mchinji District in Malawi.
