Kitulo National Park, widely known as the “Serengeti of Flowers” or the “Garden of God,” is a breathtaking high-altitude plateau in southern Tanzania. Covering 413 square kilometres across the Kipengere and Poroto mountain ranges, it was the first national park in tropical Africa established specifically to protect its extraordinary floral diversity.
Unlike a traditional big-game safari destination, Kitulo offers a unique botanical experience. During the rainy season, from December to April, the rolling grasslands burst into a spectacular display of colour as thousands of wildflowers bloom across the plateau. The park is home to more than 350 species of vascular plants, including over 45 species of terrestrial orchids, making it one of the most important botanical sites in Africa.
Kitulo is also a paradise for birdwatchers. It is the only known natural habitat in Tanzania for the endangered Denham’s bustard. Bird enthusiasts may also encounter the rare blue swallow, the Kipengere seedeater, mountain marsh widows, and large flocks of migrating European white storks.
The park is equally significant for primatologists, as it is home to the Kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji). Discovered in 2003, it was the first new monkey species identified in Africa in more than two decades, making it one of the continent’s most remarkable recent wildlife discoveries.
Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,600 metres between Mbeya and Njombe, Kitulo is not the easiest destination to reach. We hired a Toyota RAV4 from Paul for USD 45, plus a driver for an additional USD 20, and gasoline, of course (⛽100,000 TZS / 171 km). The journey to Mwakipembo Gate alone took a tiring three hours. After paying the entrance fee (🎟️92,335 TZS) and vehicle fee (🚙29,500 TZS), we continued into the park, driving through vast grasslands and past several scenic waterfalls.
Although we visited outside the peak flowering season and missed the famous carpets of wildflowers, the dramatic landscapes, open plains, and sense of remoteness still made the journey worthwhile.
